| Taiyuan University of Technology is located in the capital of Shanxi Province, which is of historical importance as the place of origin of Chinese civilization, and is famous for the saying ¡°Trace the 5000-year civilization to China, and trace the Chinese civilization to Shanxi¡± because of its abundant cultural relics and beautiful scenery.
With more than a century of growth, Taiyuan University of Technology (TUT) has become a university of many disciplines, specializing in engineering and science. It is the only university in Shanxi Province that has been included in the national higher education program ¡°Project 211¡±. At present, TUT has 5 post- doctorate research centers, 1 first-class Ph.D. program, 18 second-class Ph.D. programs, 56 Master¡¯s Degree programs, and 15 Engineering Master¡¯s Degree programs. There are also 2 state key disciplines and 9 provincial key disciplines. Approximately 20,000 undergraduates and 3,000 postgraduates are now pursuing study and research at the university. For a considerable period of time, this university has been recruiting foreign teachers and experts on both a short-term and long-term basis to improve the quality of teaching.
TUT has entered into partnerships with more than 30 foreign universities in a number of countries, such as the U.S.A., Japan, and Britain, among others. Close cooperation has been established with respect to personnel training, research program, and other areas. TUT began accepting foreign students in 1985, who may apply for admission to undergraduate or graduate school provided they have passed the Chinese Language Proficiency Exam. At present, there are 15 foreign students from 5 countries studying Martial Arts, Chinese Language, and other subjects here.
TUT is rich in teaching strength. The university now has the total personnel strength of 4,000, of which 1,800 are teachers. Among the teaching staff are approximately 1,000 professors and associate professors, and about 70 doctoral supervisors. TUT has 1 member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 academic committee member of the Engineering and Technological Department of Education Ministry, 7 young and middle-aged experts who have attained remarkable achievements for the country, 4 provincial Scientific Prize Winners, 10 provincial Outstanding Experts and 2 teachers who were awarded State Outstanding Youth Funds. Over 100 professors receive special support from the government and nearly 100 famous scholars are honored professors or guest professors by the other universities.
The common goal of all of us at TUT is to turn ours into a first-class national university with a high level of teaching and research. We believe that goal is sure to be realized.
